Dr. Jenn performing cat/cow movement with cupping treatment at Root To Rise in Saco, Maine

Ever wonder why people are walking around with circular marks on their back and shoulders and wondering what it is and why they have it? It is cupping! It is an ancient healing technique that has made its way into modern wellness. But how does it actually work? Lets break it down:

What is cupping?

  • Cupping uses suction (via silicone, glass or plastic) to create a negative pressure on the skin. This lifts the tissue pulling blood, fascia and lymph towards the surface, promoting blood flow and circulation to release tight muscles and muscle knots to promote healing from the inside out.

How is this different/how does it compare to massage?

  • Massage uses compression - pressure down into the muscles using a kneading motion to improve mobility and reduce tension. It helps break down knots and increase blood flow.

  • Key different is cupping = decompressions and massage = compression

Both cupping and massage have the same goal, just approach it differently. Both can be very useful in releasing chronically tense muscles.

Benefits of cupping:

  • Decreases muscle tension

  • Improves mobility

  • Increases blood flow to boots healing and recovery

  • Helps break up scar tissue & adhesions

Did you know that cupping therapy isn’t just for sore shoulders and back? It can be a powerful tool in pelvic floor rehabilitation too. Pelvic floor dysfunction isn’t just about the pelvic floor itself - its often linked to tightness, restricted fascia and poor circulation in the surrounding areas like hips, glutes, abdomen and lower back

How cupping can help with pelvic floor

  • Increase circulation & lymphatic flow to rescue inflammation and promote healing

  • Reduces fascial restriction around the hips, low back and abdomen

  • Relives tension in glutes, piriformis and pelvic floor adjacent muscles
