Yoga for Osteoporosis: A Functional Strength & Movement Approach

  • The Portland Yoga Project 449 Forest Avenue Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

With Dr. Jenn Gelfand, PT, DPT, E-RYT Physical Therapist, Pelvic Health Specialist, Yoga & Barre Instructor and Owner of Root To Rise.

Osteoporosis and low bone density don’t mean you have to stop moving—but they do call for a smarter, more supportive approach. This 90-minute workshop offers a safe, empowering way to practice yoga while supporting bone health, strength, balance, and confidence.

This workshop blends evidence-based physical therapy principles with yoga and strength training. You’ll learn how bones respond to load, why strength and impact matter for bone health, and how to adapt yoga postures to reduce fracture risk while still building resilience.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • How osteoporosis and low bone density affect movement and stability

  • Which yoga postures and movement patterns support bone health—and which may need modification

  • Strength, balance, and alignment strategies to reduce fall risk

  • How to move with confidence rather than fear

This workshop is appropriate for those with osteoporosis or osteopenia, as well as anyone wanting a clearer, safer approach to yoga and strength for long-term bone health. Modifications and options will be offered throughout, and no prior yoga experience is required.
