Frequently Asked Questions about Pregnancy Physical Therapy
-
Yes. Pregnancy PT is gentle, supportive, and safe throughout all trimesters when performed by a trained pelvic health therapist. We tailor each session to your stage of pregnancy, your symptoms, and your comfort.
-
You can begin at any time. Some people start early to prevent symptoms, while others come in when issues like back pain, pelvic pressure, or leaking show up. We’ll meet you exactly where you are and adjust care as pregnancy progresses.
-
The pelvis means “basin” in Latin. The bones of the pelvis form a bowl shape structure which serves to support our upper and lower body. The pelvic floor muscles live within the pelvic bowl and run from the pubic bone to tail tailbone.
Theses muscles are responsible for many important functions in the body including bladder, bowel, and sexual health and are an important player in providing strength and stability to surrounding regions of the body.
The pelvic floor muscles are just like the other muscles in the body. They can become tight, weak, and uncoordinated resulting in pain, discomfort and compensation. Their influence extends far past the local musculature and pelvis and include the hips, spine, abdomen, ribs, diaphragm and more. This complex part of the body requires a whole body approach.

What to expect during an internal pelvic floor exam and internal manual treatment
If you’ve been referred to pelvic floor therapy or if you know someone who has received this care and you’re wondering what to expect from your first visit, we wrote a blog about everything you can expect here! Recently, we’ve had a lot of questions about the “internal part” of the pelvic floor exam and treatment.
If you’re also wondering what this means, check out our latest blog post by Dr. Jenn!
At Root To Rise, we believe every birthing person deserves supported, empowered care through pregnancy, birth, and recovery.
You carried, you delivered, now you get to rebuild. In the shift from prenatal care to postpartum pelvic-floor therapy, we help you heal the changes that birth brought: pelvic-floor shifts, abdominal separation, postural and movement adjustments. Our goal is to help you feel strong, supported, and equipped for this new chapter of motherhood.
Postpartum Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
Support, healing, and strength for your fourth trimester and beyond. The postpartum period is a profound time of transformation, physically, emotionally, and energetically. Along with the joys of new parenthood, many birthing people face challenges that can feel overwhelming or unexpected.
At Root To Rise, we’re here to help you heal, reconnect with your body, and navigate recovery with compassionate, expert care. Pelvic floor therapy is a powerful way to address common postpartum concerns and help you feel more like yourself again so you can focus on what matters most.
How we can help you inside postpartum physical therapy:
Rebuilding Core & Pelvic Floor Strength: Pregnancy and birth can weaken your core and pelvic floor, leading to leaking, heaviness, or feeling unstable. We help you gently rebuild strength and function so you can move with confidence again.
Postural Recovery & Body Mechanics: Lifting, feeding, and carrying your baby takes a toll. We teach you supportive movement, ergonomic strategies, and strength work to ease pain, protect your body, and restore healthy alignment.
Scar Tissue Mobilization & Healing: Whether from a tear, episiotomy, or cesarean, scar tissue can create tightness or discomfort. We provide hands-on treatment and teach gentle techniques to soften tissue, improve mobility, and support healing.
Emotional & Mental Well-Being: Postpartum recovery is physical and emotional. We create a supportive space to help you process your experience, reduce pain, improve mobility, and reconnect with your body and sense of self.
Embrace your healing journey. You are navigating the new demands of parenthood, and by addressing your physical challenges early on, you’re not only supporting your body’s recovery but also enhancing your quality of life. Remember, taking care of yourself is an important part of taking care of your baby. Your physical therapist can help you return to your daily activities with confidence, strength, and vitality.

We at Root to Rise recognize that the first several weeks after your little one enters the world can seem a bit overwhelming, and it can be difficult to get to appointments and receive the care you need.
For convenience, we offer a 2-week telehealth appointment where we will discuss your labor/birth story and any current symptoms you may have. Then we will educate you on how to establish self-care routines and instruct you on gentle exercises, breathing techniques, and stretches you can begin to promote healing and optimize your pelvic health following vaginal or c-section delivery.
At the 6-week mark, we offer an in-person follow-up visit where your therapist will work with you to create a customized plan that meets your needs and aligns with your recovery pace.
